memorizing

According to my alma mater, Washington University in St. Louis – for which I performed countless medical and psychological experiments in order to contribute the exorbitant tuition fee (which I will still be paying off for the next 30 years), there are four main ways that memory test subjects retrieve information:

1) A visual inspection strategy in which participants carefully studied the visual appearance of objects.

2) A verbal elaboration — or word-based strategy — in which individuals constructed sentences about the objects to remember them.

3) A mental imagery strategy in which participants formed interactive mental images of the objects — similar to animated cartoons.

4) A memory retrieval strategy in which they thought about the meaning of the objects and/or personal memories associated with the objects.

(information published in Science Daily)

Along these lines, I would like to list the strategies I will use to try and retrieve information during the LEED AP exam. You can search through my posts based on these memorization strategies by clicking on one of the categories in the right column.

acronyms – a word formed from the initial letters of other words
discussion – the action or process of talking about something, typically in order to reach a decision or to exchange ideas
visualization – to form a mental image of; imagine
math & numbers – an arithmetical value, expressed by a word, symbol, or figure, representing a particular quantity and used in counting and making calculations and for showing order in a series or for identification
mnemonics – a device such as a pattern of letters, ideas, or associations that assists in remembering something
rhymes – correspondence of sound between words or the endings of words
tables – a set of facts or figures systematically displayed

Thanks for the links – lot of helpful information.

How did you arrive at 7 ID for SS? Manicell’s shows 9.

And the “Exemplary Performance Credits” Chart you posted on here from “intheleed” website shows only 6.

Can you explain where I might be interpreting this wrong?

    Thanks,
    Brandon

Well, I just went through the RG and noted every credit that had an ID option.

The discrepancies could be in the Alternative Transportation section. Credit 4.1 lists the possibility to double everything for an ID point, but there is also the option of doing an overall transportation management plan that covers all four Alt Trans credits.

I’ll check it out later to day and get back to you!

I’m back – I have no idea where ‘Manicell’ got his 9 from. But I have the same as Pat on the InTheLEED table… it’s just that he counted the two Alt Trans options as one. Here’s the list:

SS2 – you can double the density of the project itself or you can double the base credit area and corresponding density
SS4s – alternative transportation management plan
SS4.1 – increase threshold of distances to public transportation and require high frequency of service
    SS5.1 – increase threshold to 75%
    SS5.2 – double everything
    SS7.1 – 100% high-albedo surfaces or underground parking
    SS7.2 – full green roof

Does Manicell list his anywhere? The only thing I can think of is that he maybe counted all of the Alt Trans ID’s as 4 total. The ARE forums have a thread up about it right now as well.

    Mariana,

A few hours ago I just joined the crow of the Legacy LEED APs!

Wish to shout Thank-You many times indeed, with the persistent and grateful rhythm of a Buthanese mantra!

Your memo techniques are just simple, powerful and persistent enough to decode the most turbid and secret monastical enigma, including LEED.

    Grazie, veramente, dal cuore!

    Luigi
